TUCSON, Ariz — Tucson driver Alex Bowman wasn't even born when Tim Richmond was shaking up the Nascar circuit, but on Sunday, the Tucson driver will honor the 1980's racer.
Bowman's car and firesuit will replicate that of Richmond's during Nascar's Darlington Throwback Weekend. Sunday's race is the Bojangles Southern 500.
"I feel like everyone wants to be a little like Tim Richmond," said Bowman. "It's a neat paint scheme. Having Axalta bring those colors back is neat. The car looks great, and so does the firesuit."
Richmond was a colorful personality who won seven races in 1986. He lost his life due to complications from AIDS.
Bowman, who drives the 88 car for Hendrick Motorsports, is a graduate of Ironwood Ridge High School. He won his first race in Nascar's highest level earlier this season.
