TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Tucson man will spend 10 years in prison before being deported for the death of his girlfriend's 9-month-old baby.

Ivan Alejandro Portillo, 24, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and child abuse charges in June.

Portillo and his girlfriend -- 27-year-old Salma Rodriguez -- were first arrested on child abuse charges after Tucson Fire responded to a report of an unresponsive child in May 2017. Tucson Police say the two told them the infant, Jose valenzuela, had rolled off the couch and hit the carpeted floor.

Detectives say further investigation led them to determine the child had been injured and had some kind of abusive head trauma.

Rodriguez's sentencing is scheduled for September.
