SAFFORD, Ariz. -- The Bureau of Land Management Gila District is now taking applications for the 2019 fire season. Wildland firefighters provide a valuable service, protection communities and public lands, BLM says.

Those interested in applying must be at least 18-years-old, have a strong work ethic, be able to pass a fitness pack test, medical exam and maintain good physical fitness. BLM says applicants must also be available to travel out of state for long periods of time and be willing to contribute in a "team-structured environment."

According to the Bureau, most fire duties will be in southeastern Arizona but some assignments could take place out of state. Those assignments could last 14 consecutive days, plus travel time. Pay will be $18.64/hour.

If interested in applying, contact Kress Sanders or Michael McCoy at the Gila District fire office at 928-348-4400.

Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2019. Applicants will be notified in April if they are selected for one of the 20 open positions on the crew. Recruits will then get classroom and field training.
