TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — People across Southern Arizona woke up to a blanket of snow after a winter storm swept through the area late Wednesday into early Thursday.

In the Tucson area, much of that snow melted by late morning.

However, communities in higher elevations held onto the Winter Wonderland into the evening. One viewer in Saddlebrooke reported 6 inches of snow at her home.

In Catalina, the storm dropped enough snow to make the mountains look like the backdrop of a Christmas card.

However, the storm also knocked over poles that knocked out power and internet for some in the neighborhood Thursday morning.

Many were out celebrating the rare snowfall, ditching work or even pulling over on the side of the road to enjoy the snow.

Toby and Patty Netko are from Wisconsin, but are staying in Catalina for the winter. They say this winter storm is still an improvement from the ones they are used to back home.

“I did look for a snow shovel this morning, but I realized they don’t have any here," Toby said. “We got older. We wanted to retire and not shovel [snow] anymore. And down here, it’s nice to see in the mountains. It’s gorgeous.”

The couple also says their dog loves the snow, and feels like he's at home again.

“A bad day here is still a better day than in cold Wisconsin," said Toby.
