Herm Edwards will soon be officially named as the next head football coach at Arizona State University, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Devils Digest, which was among the first media outlets to report the firing of six-year head coach Todd Graham on Sunday, reported Wednesday that Edwards to ASU is a "done deal" pending approval from ASU president Michael Crow. Devils Digest reported the "deal has been done for days" and Edwards will retain Graham's assistant coaches.

Chris Karpman at SunDevilSource.com reported Wednesday that the Edwards hiring will be made official "as soon as early next week" pending Dr. Crow's approval.

A source confirmed to ABC15's Jason Snavely that it "seems highly likely" that Edwards will indeed become ASU's next coach.

"Edwards will be in Tempe this weekend to meet with ASU officials, including Crow and Athletics Director Ray Anderson. The meeting isn't taking place until this weekend so Crow can return from China, where he has been attending a Global Education Summit in Beijing," Karpman wrote for SunDevilSource.com.

"Anderson, according to the sources, doesn't need to be convinced of Edwards' candidacy for the job. The two men have known each other for a number of years and Anderson served as Edwards' agent when he was an NFL head coach. They've already had extensive conversations about the job, which Edwards is prepared to accept. Rather, it is Crow's final approval that will be sought during the weekend visit."

Edwards confirmed on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Wednesday that he will interview for the head coaching position at ASU this weekend.

Edwards spent most of his coaching career at the NFL level. After spending three seasons as San Jose State's defensive backs coach, he took the same position with the Chiefs in 1992. He served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defensive backs coach and assistant coach from 1996-2000 before being hired to his first head coaching job with the Jets.

Edwards posted a 39-41 record in five seasons with the Jets. After the 2005 season, Edwards became one of a handful of NFL coaches to ever be traded when he was dealt by the Jets to the Chiefs in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Edwards went just 15-33 in three seasons at the Chiefs helm before being fired after the 2008 season. Edwards hasn't coached since his dismissal in Kansas City, and he is currently an NFL analyst with ESPN.

Edwards is perhaps best known for his "you play to win the game" rant following a game while he was the Jets' head coach.
