TUCSON, Arizona — The New York Yankees selected Arizona Wildcats catcher Austin Wells with the 28th overall selection in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday night.

Wells was the 2019 PacO-12 Freshman of the Year. He had a career batting average of .357 with seven home runs and 74 RBI. Last summer, he won the Cape Cod League's prestigious Outstanding Pro Prospect Award.

"Austin is a special player, has all the tools to be an impact Major League player, and has an intense desire to help his team win," said Arizona Baseball head coach Jay Johnson.

Wells is the 12th first-round pick in program history.
