TUCSON, Ariz — Tucson's Indoor Football League team didn't go outside the organization for its new president, hiring current media relations director Jay Gonzales.

Gonzales is a longtime member of the Tucson sports community, having graduated from Sahuaro High School and the University of Arizona where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism.

"Jay checks all the boxes in terms of what we were looking for including being a part of the Tucson community his entire life," said Sugar Skulls Owner Cathy Guy. "His leadership, passion, structure and organization will allow us to continue to succeed."

"Just growing up here, there weren't opportunities to work in sports," said Gonzales. "You could work for the U of A or maybe a minor league baseball organization. Once they were gone, there hasn't been anything around. Growing up here, there was no way I could think that I would be doing something like this here in Tucson."

One role for Gonzales will be to attempt to improve the team's attendance, something the Sugar Skulls started working on towards the end of their inaugural season. Ticket prices now start as low at $10.

Gonzales replaces Mike Feder, who stepped down following the season.
