TUCSON, Arizona — Sanitized footballs, a limited crowd, and masks on at almost all times.
"If that’s what it takes to be able to play this game of football, I’m all for it," said Salpointe quarterback Treyson Bourguet.
How serious is Bourguet? The junior almost moved to Utah, where fall football wasn’t in jeopardy due to the ongoing pandemic.
"Ultimately, we decided that staying home is more important. So is staying close to family and staying close to my friends and my teammates."
Bourguet will also stay home and play for Arizona in 2022. This Friday, he and the Lancers will take on a Casa Grande team that upset Walden Grove in the first round of last year’s playoffs.
The rebuilding Lancers aren’t expected to make a repeat trip to the state finals in Eric Rogers’ first year since taking over for the retired Dennis Bene.
"We have so much talent here that people don’t know of," added Bourguet.
Opponents are about to find out, as private schools aren’t in the waiting game Pima County schools are currently in.
