TUSCON, Ariz — Trevor Hoffman became the second Wildcat to have his uniform retired before the Wildcats season opener against UMASS-Lowell.

In a pregame ceremony, Hoffman's number fifteen was hung on the Wildcats outfield wall next to legendary Wildcat Terry Francona.

"To be associated with Terry in that regard is something pretty special, but our connection with Arizona Baseball is the most important thing," said Hoffman. "For myself playing with Coach Kindall was an honor, and really it is going to be a special day to be acknowledged like that."

Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last year. The former San Diego Padre has the second most saves in baseball history, behind only Mariano Rivera.

Hoffman was a shortstop at Arizona but changed to a pitcher as a professional. He spoke to this year's Arizona team before their season opener.

"It was a little bit about cherishing opening day," said Hoffman. "You never know how many you are going to get. You should respect your teammates. They are relationships you are going to have forever. I'm living proof of that."
