TUCSON, Ariz — The winter high school sports season will be delayed until Jan. 18.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced the shift Friday.

Teams will practice for 14 days before the start of competition after returning from winter break.

“Our focus continues to be on keeping students in school and on the playing field safely. We believe this decision will help us preserve the winter sports season,' said Joe Paddock, the AIA's associate executive director.

The winter sports regular season will end March 5. The only thing that would delay or alter the date would be a government prohibition or shutdown, the AIA said in a press release.

Winter sports include basketball, soccer and wrestling. Practice originally started Nov. 9 before the season was delayed.

Last month, Tucson-area high schools canceled football and other fall sports seasons.
