MESA, AZ — Mesa police were involved in a deadly shooting of a man armed with an ax on Monday evening. The incident took place near Meridian and Elliot roads.

Police confirm they were first called to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls about a man assaulting his ex-wife and children with a shovel outside of a home. There were also reports that the man was damaging vehicles in the area with a shovel, and that he may also have been armed with an ax and a firearm.
Multiple neighbors reportedly attempted to intervene in the altercation before officers arrived.
Police say the man was armed with an ax when an officer gave verbal commands to the man. At that point, the officer-involved shooting occurred.
Officers and Mesa Fire and Medical Department personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man has not been publicly named.
Police say there is no ongoing threat to the community, and the investigation is ongoing.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
