TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow businesses to pay some employees less than minimum wage.

HB 2523 would allow employers to pay some workers -- including part-time workers who are students and under age 22 -- the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Rep Travis Grantham, a Republican from Gilbert, introduced the legislation. A committee passed the bill 4-3 Monday.

Arizonans overwhelmingly passed a minimum wage increase in 2016 via Proposition 206. The ballot measure has gradually increased the state's minimum wage from $8.05 in 2016 to $12 in 2020. The measured raised the minimum wage to $11 an hour in 2019.
