TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Game and Fish Department is offering a reward of up to $1,500 after a javelina was found caught in an illegal leg hold trap.

AZGFD says the animal was trapped by the snout and foot for two weeks. The javelina was first spotted October 21st in the area of Speedway and Greasewood Road, but could not be captured until Tuesday. The javelina was taken to the Tucson Wildlife Center but had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

“This was the act of a criminal, a person without regard for the state’s most precious resource, its wildlife,” said Regional Supervisor Raul Vega of Game and Fish in Tucson. “In addition, this was an especially cruel act. The javelina suffered terribly.”

Those with information about the case are urged to contact The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Operation Game Thief Hotline, at 800-352-0700. Callers can report anonymously if need be, and should reference OGT #19-003832 when calling.
