AAA Arizona named Kathy Engdahl of Steele Elementary School as the top crossing guard in Pima County.
The organization announced the award at a surprise school assembly Friday.
"A crossing guard’s most important job is to make sure children get to and from school safely, but they often do much more than that,” said AAa Arizona spokeswoman Michelle Donati said in a statement. "From serving as classroom aides to staffing extracurricular activities, these stewards of safety are an important and valued part of their school communities."
Engdahl, who has been a crossing guard since 2009, received a plaque and $500 gift card, as well as a $500 gift card for the school.
