Sears is closing 63 more stores

Posted
and last updated

Just one week after bringing back their holiday "Wish Book," Sears Holdings is announcing the closure of 63 more stores. The 45 Kmart locations and 18 Sears stores will remain open for the holidays, with closure dates in January 2018. Liquidation sales, however, will begin as soon as Nov. 9. These latest closures are more in a string of many others across the country, including more than 300 Sears and Kmart locations combined. The news is even worse in Canada, where all Sears Canada locations are closing, leaving 12,000 people without jobs. Although no longer a parent company of Sears Canada, Sears Holding does own shares of Sears Canada. “Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size. In the process, as previously announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members," a press release on the company's website reads. Here's the full list of the latest closures from Sears and Kmart:

Other News About Sears Holding

The latest closures also follows an announcement just last month that Sears would no longer be selling Whirlpool products, though they now have a partnership with online retailer Amazon to sell Kenmore appliances. kenmore photo “The launch of Kenmore products on Amazon.com will significantly expand the distribution and availability of the Kenmore brand in the U.S.,” Sears CEO Eddie Lampert said in a statement. Sears shares fell about three percent the day the newest closures were announced and are down more than 40 percent in 2017. The news of the Amazon partnership did however cause their stock to soar more than 24 percent.
