The Tucson Police Foundation was established in 2003. Ongoing collaboration with Tucson Police Department personnel allows the Police Foundation to provide some of our officers greatest needs. The Police Foundation has been able to fully fund or supplement the cost of safety equipment, technology items and ongoing officer safety training. The Police Foundation raises money by participating in many competitive grant processes, presenting community fundraising events and programs and by building relationships with local corporate and business partners.
Some recent items the Police Foundation has been able to provide includes: 10 Vehicle Heat Sensor with Alarm Notification Systems, 10 Non-Lethal Pepperball Launch Systems and 2 Remote Control robotic cameras for the K9 Unit, 5 bicycles and gear for the Bicycle Patrol Unit, a new bomb-sniffing dog (‘Lady’) for the Bomb Unit, 12 Window Tint Meters for Patrol and SniperFest Training for SWAT Officers.
HOW CAN YOU HELP PROTECT OUR PROTECTORS?
The month of May is pretty special for Law Enforcement. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
In the spirit of National Police Week and SALEF’s mission to help Protect Our Protectors, SALEF created Thank A Cop Day. Established in 2008, this year Thank A Cop Day will take place on Thursday, May 17th. SALEF works with local restaurants and businesses to deliver donated menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner to the Tucson, Marana and U of A police departments and sub-stations.
There are many ways the whole community can express their thanks on Thank A Cop Day. Individuals, families, schools, businesses can stop by your local police station and drop off a thank you card or note. You can give a friendly wave or say ‘thank you’ with a hand shake to a police officer as you pass. As a business, if you have a marquee sign outside, please have it display ‘Thank A Cop Today’ on May 17th. If you would like to support the efforts of SALEF, you can say thanks to our police officers by helping to protect our protectors by donating to SALEF.
