Wilhelmsen made his MLB debut with in 2011. In between, he was out of baseball and spent time as a bartender at a Tiki Bar in Tucson called the Hut.

Wilhelmsen spent the first five seasons of his MLB career with the Mariners before being dealt to the Texas Rangers. He began this year with the Diamondbacks after winning a roster spot out of spring training. However, he was designated for assignment on June 11 despite giving up fewer hits than innings pitched.
