One person is dead, another is in the hospital, and two are in police custody following an officer-involved shooting at 16th and Portland streets in Phoenix.

According to Phoenix PD's Public Information Officer Sergeant Vince Lewis, around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Phoenix police were in the area of 16th Street and Roosevelt completing an unrelated investigation when they noticed a group of juveniles or young adults drinking and walking through the streets.

One of the suspects threw a bottle at a passing car, police say. When officers attempted to make contact with the suspects, police say members of the group dispersed into different directions.

One officer followed a suspect, who was believed to be armed, to 14th Street and Portland, where officers say gunfire was exchanged. That suspect fled, according to police, and jumped into the I-10 off-ramp at 16th street, where he was struck and killed by a hit and run vehicle. The driver fled from the scene, and police are still searching for that vehicle and the person driving it.

Another suspect was located during a search of the area, police say. A K-9 and taser were both deployed, and the suspect was taken to the hospital. Sgt. Lewis says the suspect is expected to survive.

Two additional suspects were located and are now in police custody.

According to Sgt. Lewis, there was a second exchange of gunfire, but at this time, it is unclear if any suspects were injured in the second shooting.

No officers were harmed, according to police.

At this time, 16th Street is closed between Roosevelt and the I-10. The on-ramp to eastbound I-10 is also closed as police conduct an investigation into the shooting.

Police do say the area is safe and there is no danger to the community.

This is a developing story.
