TUCSON, Ariz. - State officials are close to finishing a $6.5 million automated system that will detect dust storms on Interstate 10.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the system will operate near Eloy and Picacho Peak, covering the area between mileposts 209 and 219. When dusty conditions arise, signs will warn drivers to slow down.

The system, which will start operating at an unspecified date in the coming weeks, includes sensors, message boards, changing speed limit signs and closed-circuit cameras.

The speed limit signs will be placed every 1,000 feet for the first mile in both direction, and every two miles afterward. Speeds will vary between 35 and 75 mph.

Message boards placed five miles apart will warn drivers of blowing dust and other hazards.

ADOT officials will be able to monitor traffic and road dangers via cameras.

The system was funded partly by a federal grant. For more information, visit this site.
