Windows 7 is now a thing of the past.
As of Jan. 14, 2020, Microsoft is no longer offering technical support or security patch upgrades, putting you at risk for viruses and hackers. However, the way the company is warning us can also put you at risk.
Microsoft has been sending full page pop-ups to Windows 7 users, describing the risk of continuing to use that system. The fear is scammers will see it as an opportunity, sending you a fake pop-up with their contact information.
Hackers have been doing it for years, claiming to be Microsoft, saying your computer is full of viruses and needs protection.
Here's how to protect yourself:
- Real pop-ups from Microsoft will never include a phone number. If you get one that does, it's a scammer!
- Microsoft will not reach out to you directly by phone or email. You have to contact them first.
- Don't Google Microsoft support numbers because you could get a scam number. Make sure to go directly to Microsoft.com to get help.
