State AG slaps telemarketer with $110K fine

Posted

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich sued a telemarketing company and won a $110,000 judgment.

According to the judgment, Burudi Mwonyoni and his company, Publishers Service Office, defrauded customers across the country with a magazine subscription scam. Using an auto-dialer, the company placed 48,000 phone calls a month to get people to start or renew magazine subscriptions.

"I’m as annoyed as anyone by relentless and illegal telemarketing phone calls," Brnovich said in a statement. "Deceptive telemarketers need to know the Attorney General’s Office takes complaints seriously and remains committed to prosecuting individuals who blatantly ignore Arizona law."

Brnovich says the company disguised the phone numbers from which it called, and falsely claimed that it was authorized to charge or bill customers on behalf of the publisher.
