PHOENIX — Is it a scam or not?
You get a letter in the mail saying "you're eligible for a refund" from the Arizona Department of Transportation. It says you paid your car registration for the next five years and part of a fee that you paid is being phased out.
Ben Murphy got that letter and reached out to the Let Joe Know Team saying, it's hard to believe.
Despite it being hard to believe, it is a real letter and if you get one, you could have been one of thousands who renewed their registration when a public safety fee was put into effect and then quickly removed.
In December of 2018, ADOT put the "public Safety Fee" into place. It added $32 to each car's registration and $5 for street legal golf carts. The goal was to fund highway patrol operations.
However, a few months later lawmakers decided to end the unpopular fee.
During that time, ADOT says 15,000 people paid it. They say now, you're due a refund if you paid past the end date of July 2021.
According to a spokesperson from ADOT, the refund only applies to people who paid for a five-year registration.
"They are the only ones who would have paid that fee beyond it's 7/1/2021 expiration," the spokesperson wrote.
Now, ADOT says they have identified all the drivers who qualify. However, you can check the status of your car online at AZMVDNow.az.gov. You create an account and log in.
