A woman died in a San Simon house fire Monday.

According to Cochise County Sheriff's deputies, the deadly blaze was at a home in the 2700 block of North Parker Road in San Simon. The 911 callers said the victim, 74-year-old Janet Thompson, was screaming for help.

She was transported to a burn facility in Phoenix, where she died of her injuries.

Witnesses say they heard gunshots in the area at the time of the blaze. Deputies say the fire may have started when Thompson was trying to light the pilot on her furnace.

The department will continue to investigate the incident.
