Pima County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a Thursday morning wreck southeast of town involving a Sahuarita police officer.

The wreck happened just after 6:30 a.m. in the area near South Camino Loma Alta and East Old Spanish Trail.

Deputies located two vehicles with extensive damage blocking travel on Camino Loma Alta, just south of Old Spanish Trail.

One of the vehicles involved was a marked patrol unit belonging to the Sahuarita Police Department driven by Lt. Matthew McGlone, said Deputy Cody Gress with PCSD.

Lt. McGlone and the driver of the other vehicle, 75-year-old Anthony Zangara, were immediately transported to the hospital.

Lt. McGlone is being treated for minor injuries. Zangara is being treated for more serious injuries, said Gress.

Investigators learned that Lt. McGlone was traveling northbound on Camino Loma Alta while Zangara was traveling southbound. Zangara’s hatchback crossed the center line in the roadway and collided head-on with Lt. McGlone’s vehicle.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision, said Gress.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the collision.
