Lawmaker pushes for free concealed carry permits

A state legislator is pushing for free licenses to carry concealed weapons.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, state House Majority Leader Steve Montenegro, R-Litchfield Park, is proposing a dollar-for-dollar state income tax credit to offset the cost of getting a CCW permit, which costs between $50 and $115. The tax credit would be as high as $80.

State law allows adults to carry concealed weapons. Arizona CCW permits, which are honored by most other states, allow carriers to bring weapons into places were alcohol is served. The Star reports that 251,000 people in Arizona have CCW permits.

"It's promoting safety," Montenegro told the Star about his legislation, HB 2494. "Law enforcement has told us time and time again that the first line of defense are those that carry CCW permits."

Montenegro added that CCW permit classes help teach firearm safety.
