TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Tucson police were involved in a shooting on East River Road Monday.

On Monday morning, officers responded to the area of 4000 E. Paradise Fall Drive (near N. Alvernon Way) for a report of a wanted suspect, according to TPD. Upon arrival, a patrol officer found the suspect and a woman.

During attempted contact with the two individuals, both fled on foot into a desert area, police say. The officer went after them, where he confronted the suspect.

Police say the suspect then began to charge at the officer with two bayonets.

The officer discharged his firearm, ultimately striking the suspect, according to TPD. Officers rendered aid to the suspect, where he was then taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is identified as 37-year-old James Nicholas Pacheco, police say. He was wanted for kidnapping and sexual assault from an incident that happened on April 9, 2021 in the 8000 block of E. Senate Street.

After Pacheco's release, he will be charged with Kidnapping, Sexual Assault and Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon on a Peace Officer, according to TPD.

The officer who discharged his firearm is identified as Officer Daniel Garcia, a six year veteran of the department.

The criminal investigation remains ongoing, along with an administrative investigation, which is department protocol.

No other individuals or officers were injured in this OIS.

Any further details will be released as they become available.
