TUCSON, Ariz. - A 55-year-old Tucson man was sentenced to prison for Medicare fraud last week.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 55-year-old podiatrist Loren Wessel was sentenced to 24 months in prison for submitting false Medicare claims. He provided routine care for patients at assisted living facilities but billed Medicare for more expensive services he didn't perform. He also falsified patients' medical records with ailments they didn't have.

In addition to the prison term, Wessel must bay $965,985 in restitution to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

On May 17, 2019, Loren Wessel, 55, a resident of Tucson, was sentenced by United States District Judge James A. Soto for his role in a Medicare fraud scheme. Wessel had previously pleaded guilty to Health Care Fraud.
