UPDATE (3:20 p.m., Oct. 23):
The names of the inmate and the corrections officer who allegedly shot him at Banner South on Wednesday have been released by Oro Valley Police Department.
OVPD is leading the investigation into the shooting as part of the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.
According to the news release, the inmate has been identified as 31-year-old Nathan Peru. Peru was being held on charges of two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, theft by means of transportation, burglary and endangerment.
The officer has been identified as Caitlin Acosta, a 5-year veteran of the department.
The investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE (4:19 p.m.):
Pima County Sheriff's Department said via email that the Pima Critical Incident Team has been activated to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
The email said the inmate was receiving treatment in a hospital room when an altercation occurred. The corrections officer assigned to the inmate fired her department-issued firearm.
The inmate died from his injuries, despite lifesaving measures. The corrections officer was not hurt and no hospital staff or members of the public were injured.
UPDATE: (3:40 p.m.):
The Pima County Sheriff's Department has confirmed an inmate has died after a shooting involving a corrections officer in the emergency room at Banner-UMC South.

Officials say there was a "struggle" with the inmate from the detention center.

Pima County Sheriff's Department is responding to an incident at Banner-UMC South, near East Ajo Way and South Country Club Road, according to a social media post from PCSD.
The post said there was no threat to the public.
