Monsoon mess in Avra Valley

High water long after storms passed
Posted

AVRA VALLEY, Ariz. - Monsoon made for another for a wild night here in Southern Arizona Friday. It poured down trouble for people around Avra Valley Thursday night.

When the storms hit as hard as they did Thursday night there is still plenty of wet, muddy trouble well into the following day.

Avra Valley Fire Department had to rescue a woman from a car when the Brawley Wash flooded Manville Road.

Hours later, plenty of locations around Avra Valley had water ranging from deep puddles, to fast flowing water you cross at your own risk.

Julie Marks had a tough time getting to her job at Valley Mart.

"I had to have someone come get me in the big one-ton truck and the water went over his hood."

Larry Downing took these pictures at Trico and Scrub Brush roads showing some really deep water.

“Right in front of my vehicle it's at least three and a half, four feet deep.”

Larry Downing would like to see Pima County do something to reduce the flooding on that road.  But people in Avra Valley know the quirks of the weather and the lay of the land can leave them in high water.

KGUN9 reporter Craig Smith asked Julie Marks: “Is this the kind of thing where you just kind of go like, ‘Well that's how it is here sometimes?’”

Marks: “Yup.  It's hit or miss.  Last year we got no rains for monsoon.  This year we're getting hit hard. You just never know.”

Smith: “Can you do anything different or you just roll with it?”

Julie Marks: “Get a bigger truck.”
