A man who shot a 7-year-old boy in the back in April will serve 4.5 years in jail.
Francisco Fernandez received concurrent 4.5-year sentences for aggravated assault and child abuse Thursday.
On April 27, police say the boy visited his aunt -- Fernandez's girlfriend -- and Fernandez, who shot the boy while he was handling his gun. A witness said family members initially tried to take the boy to the hospital, but police arrived and rendered aid until firefighters could transport him. He was hospitalized in critical condition, but recovered after surgery.
