TUCSON, Ariz. - A man arrested on child molestation charges killed himself, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Matthew Cartwright was arrested in 2017 on charges of sexually assaulting three girls aged 6, 8 and 10 on April 30, 2012. Deputies say he killed himself Wednesday.
In 2012, the girls said the did not know the male suspect that entered their room that night in the 111000 block of East Mountain Gate Place. The case was cold until May 2017, when new evidence led to Cartwright's identification and arrest.
Cartwright was found dead inside a vehicle on the side of East Speedway, near Saguaro National Park East.
Cartwright was charged with sexual assault, sexual conduct with a minor and burglary. His trial was scheduled to begin Friday in Pima County Superior Court.
