TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - If you're too deep in debt, you could lose your passport.
A new law passed by Congress this month allows the IRS to strip passports away from anyone who owes the U.S. government at least $50,000 in unpaid taxes.
The law gives the IRS and U.S. Department of Treasury permission to deny passport privileges to delinquent taxpayers.
Those who owe more than $50,000 will receive a written notice after the IRS has filed a lien.
Those who have their passports revoked outside of the U.S. will be allowed to return home.
