Here are some of the hottest new home video releases:
Collateral Beauty
A spectacular cast gets together to middling results in this strange, pseudo-inspiring tale of a broken man (Will Smith) who writes letters to the phenomena of love, time and death and mysteriously receives answers in the form of personifications who appear to him. Keira Knightley, Edward Norton, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris and Helen Mirren all turn in solid work, but the story goes off on oddball tangents that struggle to connect. The lone extra in the Blu-ray/digital copy combo is a featurette on the story.
Canoa: A Shameful Memory (Criterion)
This groundbreaking 1976 Mexican film tells the story of a group of hikers who were attacked by villagers, only to have the incident covered up by a corrupt priest. Shot in a visceral, archival style, the movie has been widely praised by fans of foreign cinema. Extras in the lavish Criterion set include a tribute booklet, a Guillermo del Toro introduction and an interview with director Felipe Cazals by Alfonso Cuaron.
Fences
Viola Davis took home the best supporting actress Oscar for her powerful performance in this stage play adaptation, starring best actor Oscar nominee Denzel Washington as a self-pitying, combustible patriarch who self-destructs while scrapping his way to get ahead in 1950s Pittsburgh. Extras in the Blu-ray/digital copy combo include featurettes about the adaptation from stage to screen, the actors, the neighborhood in which the movie was set and a focus on Washington's passion for the project.
Sing
A toe-tapping musical filled with adorably choreographed and composed performances of loads of pop songs, this "American Idol"-meets-"Zootopia" story tells the tale of animals looking to win a singing competition. While the material is light and free of consequence, it makes for rewatchable family entertainment. A voice cast made up of Ariana Grande, Seth McFarlane, Reese Witherspoon, John C. Reilly and Tori Kelly shines. Extras in the Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo include a music video, and several mini-movies that color in some background detail about characters.
