A former Tucsonan was sentenced to eight years in jail after being convicted of federal drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Cesar Vega-Castro, 34, a Mexican national who used to live in Tucson, was convicted of being a part of a drug trafficking organization that brought marijuana from Mexico to the United States and laundered millions of dollars.

Vega-Castro pleaded guilty in 2014 to conspiracy to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana and money laundering, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The investigation that snagged Vega-Castro also led to federal prosecutions of 10 others.
