FBI child ID app helps parents in scary moments

Missing children investigations affect communities and families.

In those terrifying moments when police swarm into homes asking parents to describe their child, some parents draw a blank.

FBI victims specialist, Colleen Hansen, has experienced the situation first hand. She knows what a parent is going through when they call in a panic to report their child missing.

Nearly 20 years ago, her son never came home for dinner after going on a bike ride with his two friends.

She tells KGUN 9 that the FBI Child ID appwould have helped her tremendously. "In those moments of crisis your mind doesn't think the same and you know you can't recall."

With the Child ID app, parents can post photos and describe their children. Adding weight, height, the color of skin, birthmarks and more.

Hansen says the app is easy and gives you options to post multiple pictures of your children.

"It has a front and back view of your child where you can put 5 different views in. Under each view, you can put pierced ears, nose, rings, even tattoos."

Authorities say any small detail can help bring a child back home. Hansen says during missing child investigations there are different people looking for your kid so details are important.

The app allows parents to call authorities directly from the app.

Hansen says the app is completely secure and information will not be released until you ask for help.
