UPDATE — 6/10:
A 63-year-old man is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle and a dump truck Monday afternoon near South Alvernon Way and East Benson Highway, according to Tucson police.
Officers responded to the scene just before 2:45 p.m. on June 9. Tucson Fire personnel also arrived and transported the motorcyclist, identified as Frank David Campa, to Banner-University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police say the driver of the other vehicle — a Kenworth dump truck — was not injured.
Traffic detectives determined the dump truck had been stopped in the curb lane for a red light on westbound Benson Highway. Campa, who was also traveling westbound, reportedly passed several vehicles on the shoulder before stopping alongside the dump truck at the front of the line.
When the light turned green, police say the dump truck began turning right onto northbound Alvernon Way and struck Campa. Investigators are still working to determine whether Campa was trying to continue westbound or also attempting a right turn.
A DUI officer evaluated the 40-year-old dump truck driver and found no signs of impairment. It’s unknown whether Campa was impaired; toxicology results may be determined through medical records.
Police identified unsafe overtaking on the right by Campa as the contributing factor in the crash.
