Cochise County cuts back recycling program

TUCSON, Ariz. - Cochise County is cutting back its recycling subsidies, saying its program is no longer sustainable.

Tucson and Sierra Vista have also cut or reduced their recycling programs.

Starting Sept. 12, those who drop off recyclables at a county transfer station will be charged for the service. Prices will range from $2 to $6, depending on the item and size.

According to the county, the changes are due to a decline in demand for materials.

“Unfortunately, market conditions and the cost of transporting and processing materials has resulted in the County – and the users of the solid waste system - having to subsidize the recycling program,” said Public Works Director Marty Haverty, in a statement. “In the long run, this will not be sustainable, with costs likely to continue to rise.”
