In a major policy shift, Boy Scouts of America has opened membership to transgender children who identify as males to enroll in its boys-only programs.
The organization had previously determined eligibility based on gender assigned on birth certificates.
A spokesman for the organization said the approach is no longer sufficient as community and state laws are interpreting gender laws differently.
