Monday was the first day of the year that taxpayers are allowed to file their 2016 returns. Good Morning Tucson anchor Samantha Cortese is reminding you of some things to keep in mind before you file:

First, your refund will be delayed if you claim the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit. Because of that delay, big tax prep companies are offering advances on refunds.

Some tax preparers try to sell you services you don't need, especially if your taxes are simple enough to file on your own.

Secondly, take a close look at your W-2 form. More of them this year will have a special verification code that you'll have to add when you file your taxes. It's a way of preventing scammers from filing fake returns.

Another change is that if you need in-person tax help from the IRS, you'll have to make an appointment.
