ARIVACA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Pima County Sheriff's Department called off an operation in the remote area of Arivaca to assist border patrol in a mine rescue.

PCSD Deputy Ryan Inglett said U.S. Customs and Border Protection was attempting to apprehend a group of individuals when one fled into an abandoned mine.  The scene is n fairly rough terrain, he said. The department called off the rescue late Wednesday night.

Inglett said authorities no longer believe anyone is in the mine.

"It is not believed that the person that went into the mine shaft was in any distress, or even in there," Inglett said, adding that he can't say for sure whether anyone ever entered the mine.

SWAT, Bomb Squad, and Search and Rescue also responded to the scene.
