Tucson International Airport's law enforcement is learning new security tactics to increase safety.
The Airport Law Enforcement Agencies Network hosted their biannual conference here in Tucson for the first time.
About 115 airport security officials from throughout the country participated in a two-day conference discussing criminals trends like thefts, shootings, and terrorism.
"We all share our information and we get ideas from other people even if it hasn't happened at our airport so we will be prepared if it does," said John Ivanoff, Tucson Airport Authority's Police Chief.
Ivanoff says with over three million flyers coming through TIA per year, crime rates are very low.
He says public safety officials are starting to count on citizens to tell them if they see something suspicious.
"They need to be paying attention," he explained. "They need to look at what's going on around them, is that person acting suspiciously, if so why and let us know about it so we can investigate it. It is probably nothing, but better to find out that way."
During the conference, the participants share ideas and learn different tactics to safely solve problems.
He says one situation they debriefed was the January shooting in Fort Lauderdale when a suspect opened fire in the baggage claim area.
"I learned a ton about what they went through and some things we could do better here that we are going to institute and make things a little more fluid, a little bit cleaner in the aftermath to whatever the problem is," he said.
