A training center focused on teaching people how to launch, stop and investigate cyber attacks is opening its second location at Grand Canyon University.
"The idea is to strengthen the cybersecurity landscape and build a strong cybersecurity workforce," said Brian Mueller, GCU president, in a press release.
The Arizona Cyber Warfare Range's Metro Phoenix location will be located in the GCU Innovation Center, near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road. It is volunteer-led and open to the public.
"We urgently need people who are serious about cybersecurity and we can't waste our time with anybody else," said co-founder Brett Scott.
Scott demonstrated how "everybody is completely vulnerable all the time" by showing ABC15 a hack that, to date, he said is untraceable and unstoppable. Using a modified drone controller, a hacker can take over someone's computer -- or multiple at a time -- from miles away without the victims ever knowing.
"Once he's captured me, everything I do on [my] computer, he sees," Scott said. Similar hacks exist that can target cell phones or cars, he said.
Experts say Arizona currently has 7,200 unfilled jobs in the cybersecurity industry. In the next two years, there will be an estimated 2 million jobs available worldwide.
