And it's still technically summer

The first snowflakes flew into the lower 48 this week.

A big winter storm blew through the higher elevations of western Montana and northern Idaho earlier this week, and now, a few of those snowflakes may fall in parts of western Wyoming and in the mountains of Utah and Colorado.

This snowfall has triggered winter storm warnings across three different states through Saturday morning.

Total snowfall accumulations will range between a trace up to two inches in elevations between 5,000 and 6,000 feet. Higher up, snowfall totals will more likely be between three and eight inches. A few isolated spots could see upwards of a foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

This snow may seem early, falling more than a week before the official start of fall, but it's right on time.

A few higher elevations in the Rocky Mountains typically see snow before October arrives while the rest of the Rockies get snow beginning next month.
