“Hopefully, they'll win the World Series…” says Shelly Verdugo to one of her co-workers. Verdugo works as a stylist at one of Tucson’s Gadabout salons.
It's not what you normally hear at a hair salon, as far as conversations go. “Do they play tonight?” Asks another co-worker….”Yes,” Verdugo responds. ..”And if they win tonight, they go to the World Series.”
But at this salon, baseball is the talk of the town....
Shelly is the proud mother of Sahuaro grad, and current Dodgers outfielder, Alex Verdugo. “It's like a local kid...and somebody that they've known forever,” says Shelly. And though Alex isn't currently on the roster with the Dodgers in Chicago…he’s close by. “He's up in Phoenix…in stay hot camp. So if they need him, he's ready.”
Alex has raced up the Dodgers minor league system....and got the call up to the big club in September.
The Verdugo's have family all over to support Alex, but her co workers have been a support system since day 1.
“When he got drafted, that was funny….nobody told me to wear something Dodgers,” says Shelly. “So I come to work and every single person here had on Dodgers on.”
And now with the Dodgers one win away from the Fall Classic....all her supportive coworkers at the salon encourage their clients to join in…”Are you watching tonight? You're going to watch. Gotta root for the Dodgers!”
