TUCSON, Arizona — One might not think right now is the best time to start a new professional sports league, but Athletes Unlimited isn't an ordinary sports league.

In this softball league which includes former Arizona Wildcats Katiyana Mauga and Danielle O'Toole, players change teams and accrue points like in fantasy leagues.

"I think it will work," said O'Toole, who is one of 56 players. "Especially with our sport. Softball is so known in college like in the Women’s College World Series. If you ask someone who their favorite player is, they’ll tell who it is even if they don’t what team they play for."

Athletes Unlimited begins this weekend in a coronavirus bubble in Chicago. They have a different business model that aims to be more player friendly. Helping the matter is that games will be nationally televised, starting Saturday on ESPN.
