Action movies like The Avengers and Captain America have won our hearts and the box office for decades now. Most of these characters traditionally have been white, but that's all changing! Donna Ruko has the top three black superheroes of 2016 that are breaking down walls.
1. Black Panther
Played by Chadwick Boseman in Captain America: Civil War
Part scientist, part warrior, this superhero got his start in Marvel comics back in 1966 at the height of the civil rights movement. Black Panther will get a standalone movie in 2018.
2. War Machine
Played by Don Cheadle in Captain America: Civil War
We first saw him in the pages of Marvel's Iron Man comic book back in 1979. He’s known as Colonel James Rhodes in the Iron Man films -- Don Cheadle's character became War Machine in the 2015 movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. This year he was a major presence the latest installment of the Captain America franchise.
3. Luke Cage
Played by Mike Colter in Luke Cage on Netflix
Luke is a former convict who uses his super-human strength to fight crime. He made his first Netflix appearance last year in the Netflix series Jessica Jones. Now he’s got his own self-titled show and it’s already a hit – breaking Netflix during the launch weekend.
