Damage after a storm?

Two important things to think about: insurance and those crooks who come out trying to make bogus repairs.

When it comes to insurance, if you haven't called your provider, do it.

Check the coverages you have and take pictures so that you have proof of what happened.

If your home has tree damage, it should be covered.

But other structures may have a cap on coverage.

Also, tree removal costs are usually capped at $500 or $1,000.

And if it was a neighbor's tree, your insurer should go after their insurance.

Car damage is covered by the comprehensive part of your auto policy.

If you're a renter, you'll get more for belongings with replacement cost coverage and a depreciated amount if you have actual cash value coverage.

Also, if your electricity was out, submit costs for any spoiled food.

Rain damage is covered by your homeowners policy.

Flooding damage is not.

It takes a separate flood policy.

And about contractors coming to your door- Never hire them.

Always check the state's Registrar of Contractors site for their license.

Click hereto check for licensed contractors.

Check online reviews and complaints.

And get an estimate before work is done.

If you didn't have damage this time, it may be a good time to check your policy and make sure you are covered.
