PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say officers fatally shot a man after he fired on an officer, who narrowly escaped serious injury thanks to his portable radio.

The Monday night shooting occurred during a struggle with 28-year-old Xavier Jaime Rovie, who had been bicycling downtown when two officers tried to stop him for traffic violations.

A police spokeswoman says the suspect fired a handgun.

A bullet struck an officer's radio, which was positioned in front of his vest.

The officers returned fire, killing Rovie.

The officer who was shot at was treated and released from a hospital for minor injuries.
