The Bureau of Land Management is looking for good homes for wild horses and burros.
An Arizona adoption and training event is being held Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 21st at the Yavapai Humane Society Equine Center in Chino Valley.
The burros and horses are gathered from public lands and will go to adopters who can provide humane care for them.
"Wild horses are known for their sure-footedness, strength, intelligence and endurance. With kindness and patience, these animals can be trained for many uses," the BLM says.
Qualified adopters are eligible to receive $500 within 60 days of the adoption date and an additional $500 within 60 days of titling for each animal, which can be applied for one year from the adoption date, the BLM says. It's part of their new Adoption Incentive Program. The incentive is only available for untrained animals that are eligible for adoption at BLM facilities, off-site events or on the agency's Online Corral website.
Untrained animals can be purchased for a minimum of $25 while trained animals are a minimum of $125.
All animals have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, de-wormed and have a current negative Coggins test.
BLM says to adopt or buy an animal, you must be 18 years old, have approved animal facilities and proper transportation home from the event. Staff will help you load the animal with your halter and lead ropes into your BLM-approved trailer.
