PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has signed legislation prohibiting cities and counties from banning new natural gas hookups.
Ducey signed the bill backed by Senate President Karen Fann and House Speaker Rusty Bowers on Friday.
It was designed to prevent the spread to Arizona of gas bans being adopted by some California cities to help combat climate change.
All three are Republicans. All Republican lawmakers and a handful of Democrats voted for the bill.
The bill's supporters say cities shouldn't decide what kind of energy is used in new homes, while opponents say the state shouldn't tie the hands of cities that want to combat climate change
